Distinguished and Famous people from Banana

The Banana Shire's notable connections include people associated with Theodore's pastoral life and Jambin's rural community organisations. Their work links local experience with parliamentary service and the representation of country women.

🤝 Neville Hewitt

Neville Hewitt was born at Theodore in 1920, attended its state school and worked on a local station after wartime service. He later became a grazier near Taroom and represented Mackenzie and Auburn in Queensland's Parliament. His ministerial responsibilities included water resources, conservation and lands. His parliamentary record also identifies work on the development of hospitals and schools serving Moura. The local connections are therefore both personal and practical, spanning schooling, agriculture and public infrastructure.

🤝 Elva May Wilson OAM

Jambin's Elva May Wilson received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2001 for service to women, particularly through the Queensland Country Women's Association. She also received a Centenary Medal recognising her work for the community and rural women. Banana Shire's honours record preserves those contributions alongside other local service. Her distinction is grounded in community organisation and representation, rather than a career built around public celebrity.

🏪 Tom McLean

Tom McLean was sixteen when his father built a store at Dululu, and the teenager ran it single-handedly for several years. His formal schooling had lasted only four years, so responsibility arrived early and in practical form. Cane farming, hotel ownership and local government later preceded the cruise business that made Captain Tom a well-known tourism figure. His ventures eventually included reef cruises and the development of Brampton Island facilities. Dululu’s connection is the actual shop he managed, offering a concrete beginning for a businessman whose later work required dealing with customers, organising supplies and seeing possibilities in a place.
